My father is a serious man of medium size. In many people’s eyes, Father seems to be a very ordinary person. But I think he is quite extraordinary.
He had a great love of his career and seldom enjoyed leisure with other colleagues. Before he retired, my father was a surgeon. He worked very hard in the hospital all the year around. He usually worked from dawn till dusk every day and even till midnight when there were some emergencies. Besides, he is strong-mined. W: Oh, I lived with an American family, the Smiths. They are very kind people. And, living in their house, I could speak English with them every day. Besides, I did not need to worry about my daily three meals. They looked after that.
M: How nice! And how about the course?
W: The course was also very good. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English. One interesting thing I found is that the American classes are different from our classes here because they are very free. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. And you are welcome to share your ideas with the class. I really like that kind of class.
M: How interesting! Maybe our teacher should try that.

Many years ago, I was driving to my parents’ home for Christmas. I stopped at a station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register, I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They took me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote them a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a present with a note from them, saying that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that a car shop was right next door. I walked over and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you” ---two powerful words. They’re easy to say but mean so much.
