When I first saw 'The Truman Show' I came out of the theatre amazed. This is your first clue that you are watching something different from your normal Jim Carrey movie. I love the dialogue, camera shot, performances, direction, music, and running time of this movie. There is nothing I would do to change it. I came away from 'The Truman Show' feeling inspired which is the goal of good filmmaking Jim Carrey was outstanding as Truman, underplaying him, not making him too comic or too dramatic, but giving true sincerity when asked. He deserved an Oscar nomination. Ed Harris has always been a good actor, but in this movie he's a great actor. He plays Christof with such arrogance and bullheadedness that you don't know whether he's helping or destroying Truman. He and the director, Peter Weir, deserved their Oscar nods. Weir, who directed the great 'Witness', uses different camera angles to make you feel like you're actually watching 'The Truman Show' and not a movie. He ends it before you get tired of the concept and helped Carrey and Harris give immaculate performances. Andrew Niccol script is a real star in the movie too because of it's inventiveness and ingenuity. Overall, 'The Truman Show' is what I like to call a true American classic.

I originally thought the premise of the Truman show was that a man simply discovered his life was on reality TV. After seeing it though, I realized how much of an understatement I'd given to a horrifying idea.
Truman (Jim Carrey) seems to live a blessed life. He has a job, a wife, and a good friend. But it is all a deceptive set-up; Truman's entire reality is created by a TV studio who long ago adopted him. Nothing he has is real; great liberties and precautions must be taken to stop him from realizing the truth (he has to schedule everything he wants, such as vacations, months in advance). The TV managers decide everything that goes on around him; from who he meets and what they say, to where he goes (never outside his hometown). When he begins to realize what may be going on, the TV show has to stop him; all mayhem breaks loose.
Everything about the Truman Show is wildly inventive; the entire thing is brilliant and original. Smart dialogue and well created sets are essentials; the plot is a refreshing break from today's usual rehash of the same story. With an energetic and powerful music score, it is complete.
A smart choice made by director Peter Wier, in making the film, was the choice to present the film as though watching the fictitious show. Using a wide variety of camera shots that make it seem as though we are watching from the secret cameras placed throughout Truman's town, Wier stages the Truman Show perfectly. His methods are original and creative; the director moves the story along wonderfully.
He gets fine performances from all his actors. Jim Carrey dulls down his comedic antics to give the dramatic performance of a man having a paranoid break-down with such fine nuance to suggest he should switch to a career of dramatic performances. Ed Harris plays the TV show's creator; one of the most original and ingenious villains ever created. With conniving ways and a falsely soothing voice, he plays the director with a sinister charm. He is a man trying to trap Truman; he whispers lines to the people in Truman's life as a way to keep the man in.
Little things make the film all the more ingenious and the false setup all the more believable (people promote products while talking to Truman; Truman experiences a rain that follows him; he notices cars on a continuous run; people seem to talk to no one). But the real winner is the presentation; an original masterwork, fueled by a timeless theme. The human spirit, the will to live, cannot be quashed by anything.
