Naming Origin: Theseus encountered Ariadne, the beautiful and intelligent daughter of King Minos on Crete. Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and secretly met with him. She gave him a magical sword and a ball of thread to help him find the exit of the labyrinth and kill the minotaur. Theseus entered the labyrinth, marked the return route with the ball of thread as per Ariadne’s instructions, and eventually found the minotaur. He killed it with the sword given by Ariadne and, with the boys and girls, followed the marks to exit the labyrinth. To prevent pursuit by Minos, they destroyed the ships on Crete. Ariadne helped them escape from Crete and return to Athens. After several days of sailing, they finally returned home. Excited, Theseus and his companions sang and danced, but they forgot to change the black sails to white as agreed with his father. King Aegeus, waiting for his son’s return at the seashore, saw the black sails and, thinking his son had been devoured by the minotaur, jumped into the sea in despair and drowned. In memory of King Aegeus, the sea where he jumped was named the Aegean Sea.
