这首英文诗应属英文现代诗之列，已经没有严格的音步结构，仅仅在句末留有简单的韵脚（此诗ABABCBCO，算是交韵），那么它必然更要依靠其诗意的多层次性，靠不同理解层次的张力获取美感，如果在翻译中这种多层次性被剥夺那绝不能说好，如果只是借用了似是而非的词语本身营造了新的诗意层次，且不说这新意境美或不那么美，起码这就是另一个创作了，或者说是某种意义上对原诗的应和。
有趣的是，这首诗的内容的一个层面恰恰就是在表达上面所说第二个如果的情况，并给出诗人皆有“我”说出的答案。强调了诗中的独立意志“我”不甘沦为附庸、配角，不愿成为“你”成就自身、自恋自怜的助力。即便从最直接的层面，即“我”对“你”感情的疑问说起，那也绝非是指“你”的言行不一，对“我”有所蒙骗，而是在说一个意象中主次的安排：之所以喜欢雨，在于只有雨才能衬托伞；之所以喜欢太阳，因为只有烈日才能凸显树荫的美好；也只有风，才让门窗有了遮蔽风雨的意义……那么“我”呢，是不是也只是你展现自我的平台？
