On Christmas Eve in 1994, humans entered a cave in the mountains of southeastern France for what was probably the first time in 20,000 years. The vivid images of more than 300 animals that Jean-Marie Chauvet and his assistants found on the cave walls were like none that they had seen before. Unusual in the Grotte Chauvet, as the cave is now called in honor of its discoverer, are paintings of many flat sheeting animals. Other known caves from the same geographical area and time period contain only paintings of plantites. The paintings in this cave refute the old theory that Cro-Magnoon people painted animals that they hunted and then ate. Now many specialists believe that cave paintings were not part of a ritual to bring good luck to hunters. They point out that while deer made up a major part of their diet, there're no drawings of deer. They believe that the animals painted were those central to the symbolic and spiritual life of the times; animals that represented something deep and spiritual to the people. Scientists are hopeful that Groo Chavie will yield new information about the art and lifestyle of Cro-Magnoon people. They readily admit, however, that little is understood yet as to the reasons why ice age artists created their interesting and detailed paintings. Scientists also wonder why some paintings were done in areas that are so difficult to get to, in caves, for example, that are 2,400 feet underground, and accessible only by crawling through narrow passageways.

23. How did the cave get its name?

24. What is the old theory about the paintings in the cave?

25. What do scientists readily admit according to the speaker?

答案:

23. B.

24. C.

25. A.

4. A) Visiting the Browning.

B) Writing a postcard.

C) Looking for a postcard.

D) Filling in a form.

4. M: What\’s the matter? You\’ve been sitting there for ages, just staring into space.

W: I told the Browning I\’d send them a postcard. Now I don\’t know what to say.

Q: What\’s the woman doing?

6. A) She can’t finish her assignment, either.

B) She can’t afford a computer right now.

C) The man can use her computer.

D) The man should buy a computer right away.

(Conversation 1A)

A: How's your dissertation going?

B: Oh, I haven't even started writing mine yet. So I'm really worried about finishing by the end of next semester.

A: You mean you haven't even begun yours yet? The final draft is due in five months.

B: Of course I've started it in a sense, but I can't get to the writing yet, as I haven't found enough resources to use. So I'm still researching the topic.

A: Maybe the problem is the way you're doing your research. I started by talking to my professor about where to look for information. And based on that, I found books in the library and a lot of reputable journal articles on the internet.

B: I've tried all that, but don't have enough to write the dissertation, as my department's minimum length is 70 pages. I think the problem is that my topic isn't viable. And honestly, my professor did warn me at the beginning that I might not be able to find enough material. But I was so interested in the topic that I didn't let his advice deter me.

A: Well, I suggest you find a new topic. After all, our professors are here to guide us, so it's best to listen to them.

B: In retrospect, I wish I had listened to him, but I didn't. And now I don't want to give up my topic, as I've already invested so much time and energy.

A: If you're committed to your current topic, maybe you could make some adjustments rather than abandoning it completely. What is your topic?

B: It's depictions of femininity in folklore from the south of the country.

A: That's pretty narrow. You could find more material if you made the topic broader, maybe by including other kinds of depictions.

B: Broadening the topic is a great idea. I'll start by including folklore from other regions of the country.

Question 1 What does the woman say about her dissertation?

The woman says she hasn't even started writing her dissertation yet and is worried about finishing it by the end of next semester.

Question 2 What does the man say about his professor?

The man says he started his research by talking to his professor about where to look for information, and based on that, he found relevant books and articles.

Question 3 What does the woman say about her professor?

The woman says her professor warned her at the beginning that she might not be able to find enough material for her topic, but she was so interested in it that she didn't let his advice deter her. In retrospect, she wishes she had listened to him.

Question 4 What do we learn the woman will do to complete her dissertation?

We learn that the woman will broaden her topic by including folklore from other regions of the country to complete her dissertation.
